2018 — a year in review

by Cody Carnachan,

In agency-land, the early months of a year are always the toughest. Decision makers often haven’t returned from their Christmas break and once they do, they take at least a few weeks to firm up their briefs, let alone choose a partner to work with; it’s often deathly quiet.

But despite an unexpected, somewhat rocky start to 2018, it’s been a massive year for us here at Hatch.

We started the year off with a humble six man team and after a few changes, we now end the year having doubled in size, with a much stronger 12 and 3 new Hatchlings scheduled to start in early January!

Measuring growth

One way to think about growth is that the size of our team is essentially a reflection of the sustained demand from new and existing clients.

This year, there’s been a lot of demand and as a result, we’ve got to work with some truly amazing people on some truly amazing projects.

Some highlights include:

  • Travelling to Samoa not once, but twice, to kick-off and then execute a digital transformation project for the Samoa Observer, Samoa’s leading newspaper for the past 40 years, which will truly change the media and political landscape of the entire country.
  • Working with well-known and well-respected home appliance (& more) company, Electrolux, to release a new robotic vacuum product that is already dominating the market
  • Collaborating with our good friends at Opes Partners to build a substantial automation platform that will help them deliver the best property investment consulting service in New Zealand as well as building a completely new Real Estate offering launching in early 2019 (watch this space!)
  • Continuing to work with our longest-standing client, Sarah from BigMouth Voices, to build on and grow her global voice-over platform we released almost 2 years ago now!

But that’s not all.

To all the people we’ve worked with throughout the year including the ones that haven’t been mentioned above — thank you.

This year our team has worked hard — over 7555 hours hard — to help you and your businesses grow. And we’ve loved every moment of it.

Moving spaces

As we all know, the space you work in plays a key role in your ability to enjoy and complete your job to a high standard.

Earlier this year, we faced the challenge of having to find a new space as our previous lease came to an end.

We made the decision to move into Generator, smack bam in the middle of the city and boy was that a great move!

I want to take this moment to thank Amy and the team at Generator for their incredible hospitality and flexibility in working with us through a turbulent period of growth for Hatch.

Growing the top line

Whilst growth in the monetary sense isn’t our primary driver, it’s always good to reflect back on how we’ve done relative to the past.

As you’ll see in the graph below, using 2016 as a base, we’re almost x8 up.

I’m also happy to report that, only 9 months through this financial year, we have already surpassed FY2018 revenue by 25% with 3 more months of the year to go. Good going!

The team

As you will have read above, we have had quite a few changes to the team this year, and, if you’ve missed the announcements, you might not know who the additions are.

Here are the people who have joined this year:

I want to say a huge thank you to the entire team, including those listed above as well as those who have been with us longer Sam and Ed for all the hard work you have put into delivering top quality work all year.

A sneak peek into 2019

Now I don’t want to ruin too many of the surprises we have in store but here are a few teasers.

There are murmurings of a new-look, new-name "Hatch" coming in the first quarter of 2019. If you have followed us closely over the past few years, you’ll notice we did a brand refresh earlier this year. I don’t want to say too much but I will say that the changes to our brand will be significantly more drastic than what we’ve done in the past.

We are also reaching the point now where we have outgrown our current office space and are looking for something more "our own". Early next year, we’ll be looking for the next place for us to call home.

We have a lot of growth planned for next year and are expecting that we’ll double in size again by Christmas in 2019. We’ll keep you updated so stay tuned!

A heartfelt thank you

Last but not least — to all valued clients, partners and friends of Hatch: we want to say a big heartfelt thank you.

Thank you to those of you who took a leap of faith and trusted in us to help you build on your (or one of your clients’) digital presence.

Or maybe you haven’t worked with us before; maybe you are just a supporter. There’s a lot of you out there and I want to say thank you to you all.

On behalf of the team here at Hatch, I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and an enjoyable summer break.

Here’s to a prosperous 2019!
